As part of our commitment to theatre in the community, we are excited about our new venture, “Out of the Darkness.” The project aims to give a voice to various groups within the community of a selected area.
We all have life experiences, both good and bad, that we encounter throughout our lives. Not all experiences are the same, however. Different people have different experiences. Unfortunately, people don’t always share their experiences with others, and this can create an atmosphere of misunderstanding and even animosity towards a particular group. Out of the Darkness aims to present the views and life experiences of many groups to the wider population, so that we can all gain a greater understanding of those we perceive as being different from ourselves.
Initially we are touring the production to five areas in the East and Southeast region of the UK. Within each area, we will contact the local, social, and focus groups, organisations, and societies, that represent the diverse groups within society. We will be looking for five groups in each areas, with whom we will run a workshop to explore their concerns, stories of positivity, comic anecdotes, etc; and to look at ways we can express and make heir voices heard. The five workshops (one for each group) will take place within a two-week period, and for the third week, we will take all the experiences, stories and accounts discovered in the workshops, and devise a one-hour show, around the voices of the five groups. Any participants from the workshops will be invited to take part in the performances if they so wish. During the fourth week, we will stage three performances, of the show created and devised by the various groups of the respective local community.
The project is designed to give a platform for the thoughts and views of the minority groups within society. This aims to help individuals unfamiliar with the daily experiences of those underrepresented groups, gain a better understanding. Additionally, it provides a platform for underrepresented groups to share insights about their lives.
We are currently looking for groups that might like to participate in the project and if you are from a particular group, organisation or society and would like to know more about becoming involved, we would love to chat to you about this exciting new project.
