As part of our Theatre in Education Resource packages, we are excited to present Cecil and the Great Book Adventure to coincide with world book day. This brand-new interactive show, is aimed at 4- to 11-year-olds and promotes reading in a fun and exciting way. The show is devised by our artistic director, Ian Britten-Hull who is a published author himself and is passionate about introducing children to the wonders of reading. Ian has over thirty years experience creating engaging and educational projects for young audiences through collaborations with renowned companies like Blackpool Tower, Shakespeare 4 Kidz, Seagull Theatre, and Spin Off Theatre.
For older children, the show is adapted so the content and delivery is more suitable for the older age groups. Cecil and the Great Book Adventure is available from Monday 3rd March.
This interactive and educational show for children is designed to encourage reading by making the concept of books interesting as well as showing how books are the magical gateway to all kinds of adventure. The children are encouraged to contribute with ideas and suggestions as the show progresses.
This show is produced in two versions – a large theatre style production for schools, community centres and theatres, as well as a smaller and compact version ideal for libraries, exhibitions and venues with restricted space.
One rainy day Cecil the Blackbird is bored. His two friends Dromeo & Tilly try to cheer him up by suggesting different things he could do. None of what they suggest is of any interest to Cecil. Finally, Tilly suggests he reads a book. Unfortunately, Cecil thinks reading a book is more boring than doing nothing! It is up to Dromeo & Tilly to show him exactly how wonderful a book actually is. They start by suggesting he just read a few lines of a book and then do something else. Cecil does exactly that, but after he has read a few lines of a story, he finds it hard to do anything else because he can’t help wondering what happens next in the story. His curiosity gets the better of him and he rushes to pick up the book again just to find out what happens next.
As Cecil reads the book, the characters and the various stories come to life before our very eyes. As the adventure goes along, the characters interact with the children and ask them about the story and what they would do in certain situations?
At the end of the show, Cecil is so excited about all the adventures he’s had that he decides to write them all down in his very own book, Cecil and the Great Book Adventure. He reminds us “that to be a leader, you need to be a reader!”
Have you ever dreamed of finding a book of spells that can take you on many wonderful adventures? Within minutes he was transported into another world of wonderful characters and exciting adventures.
